Ben Sheets racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts at PNC Park where
the Seattle Sockeyes beat the Beltway Boppers by the score of 7 to
3.

Sheets(1-0) pitched a solid game. He surrendered 10 hits and no walks in 8
innings and allowed 2 gopher balls. Seattle finished with 11 hits in the
victory.

Mark Mulder(0-1) took the loss. Seattle scored big getting 4 runs off him in
3 and 1/3 innings. Sheets was asked about his big strikeout performance,
'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead
of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and
quiet. Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the
game.'

Jason Schmidt(0-2) was the losing pitcher. When questioned about his
counterpart after the game, Schmidt was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious
very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Perez brought
his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly.
He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!

Jeff Kent cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the New York Aces defeated the
Minneapolis Millers 11 to 10 at Coors Field.

Kent led the offense for New York. He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 4th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his
2nd of the season) in the 7th inning. Minneapolis threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.

The victory went to Al Leiter(1-0) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 5
runs. Leiter got help from Jason Isringhausen who was credited with his 1st
save. Tom Glavine(0-1) was hit with the loss. He gave up 5 runs in 4
innings of work.

'He gutted it out' Irv Murray said of Leiter. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'

Raul Ibanez cleared three ducks from a very crowded pond with a grand slam as
the New York Aces defeated the Minneapolis Millers 10 to 5 at Coors
Field.

Ibanez enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He lined a single in the 6th
inning, launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season) in the 8th
inning and stroked a one-base hit knocking in a run in the 9th inning. This
was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.

The win was credited to Ray King(1-1) who went 1/3 of an inning allowing no
runs. Wil Ledezma gained credit for his 1st save. Bob Howry(0-1) took the
loss in relief.

WEB GEMS- Bot 4th: Jason Varitek blocked the plate, saving a run!

Craig Wilson cracked a homer and had 4 RBI at Goiterville as the New York Aces
beat the Galloping Goiters by the count of 15 to 11.

Wilson was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He clubbed a three-run home run (his
2nd of the season) in the 1st inning, stroked a single which plated a run in
the 3rd inning and delivered a base-hit in the 6th inning. New York bats
were hot in the 1st inning with 6 runs on 3 hits and the 3rd inning with 4
runs on 5 hits. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings, Galloping could not
get the win.

Ray King(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Matt
Riley(0-1) was given the loss. He gave up 6 runs and 3 hits in 2/3 of an
inning.

Marcus Giles had 4 hits as the Galloping Goiters rallied impressively to win
in dramatic style over New York Aces, 9 to 8.

Galloping won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 4

recorded, Aubrey Huff came up and he doubled. Jeremy Reed then was walked
intentionally to load the bases. Kevin Millar followed and he smacked a
single scoring a run. Millar took second on the throw. Brian Schneider
stepped into the box and doubled giving Galloping the victory and sending the
29,670 home-town fans home happy. It was roller coaster of a game as the
lead change hands 5 times.

Isringhausen(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 3 runs and 4
hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.

'What a win!', Gagne said. 'These are the kind of games that stand out in
your mind at the end of a season.'

Game 2 -- It's a classic pitchers duel between Bartolo Colon and Mark Prior, as Galloping takes Game 2 by a 1-0 score to tie the series at a game apiece. Marcus Giles' RBI double in the sixth inning knocked in Michael Restovich with the game's only run. Eric Gagne goes three innings for the save and strikes out Jeff Conine with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to preserve the win. The series now heads to Galloping for Games 3, 4 and 5.
